Ladies and gentleman, Childish Gambino, AKA Donald Glover, has just dropped a two-part mixtape/EP entitled STN MTN/KAUAI, and in true Gambino-fashion it does not disappoint. Combining dope beats with impressive lyricism, Childish Gambino's STN MTN/KAUAI is well worth the listen. The free mixtape STN MTN, which dropped October 2nd, kicks off the large Gambino project, and left me wanting more after listening to it. My thirst for more Gambino content was fulfilled after he dropped the accompanying EP KAUAI October 3rd. The project as a whole is a great experience and I advise you to get both the EP and the mixtape as they go hand in hand.

STN MTN

1. 'Dream/ Southern Hospitality/ Partna Dem'

Gambino begins the opening track of his Gangsta Grillz mixtape 'Dream/ Southern Hospitality/ Partna Dem' in a monologue where he describes a dream he had of running Atlanta, and then goes straight into the music. On the first track Gambino does what he does, spitting lyrics with his notorious, fast-paced style over a sample of Ludacris' 'Southern Hospitality' and then a sample of Rich Kids's 'My Partna Dem,' both songs being referenced in the song's title. Both sample choices were great and fit great with CG's flow and hyped me up for the rest of the mixtape. Gambino's delivery was on point throughout the whole track, matching up with the both beats, and acted as a capsule for his memorable lyrics. The track was the perfect way to start off the project and set my expectations high.

2. 'Fucks Given'

On the next song 'Fucks Given,' CG shows his musical range and switches it up by going into a singing/rapping hybrid over a slower, Nick Banga-produced beat. This track is the first of many to include his singing, which he does throughout the mixtape and EP, but, just to be clear, he doesn't overdo it as his rapping is still focal point of the project. Bino continues to impress on this track, still spitting fire but at a slower pace. Compared to the first song on the mixtape, it has a chiller, more R&B-esque vibe to it, foreshadowing the mixtape's many different styles. The track's instrumental was simple, yet dope, allowing the focus to be on Gambino himself. The song was enjoyable and kept my expectations high for the rest of the mixtape.

3. 'No Small Talk'feat. Kari Faux

'No Small Talk' is a remix of the Kari Faux song of the same name, and Faux herself is included as a feature on the track, Bino opting to keep her hook, one of her verses, and a bridge. Gambino continues to kill it with his flow and lyrics, and Faux's verse taken from the original song is just dope, adding to the already great track. The beat, taken from Faux's song, does its job in providing a solid instrumental, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the last two because of the annoying ringing sound present throughout the track. Don't get me wrong, the beat isn't terrible; I just don't find it as good as the last two. One thing I'd like to point out is the amount that Kari Faux is in this song, having just as much time on the track as Gambino and maybe even more. I didn't mind it, though, because there's plenty of him throughout STN MTN/KAUAI because this is, of course, a Childish Gambino project. I liked the verses on the track, but that ringing noise just bothered me, so overall, it wasn't a bad song, but it could've been handled better.

4. 'Money Baby'

Gambino remixes yet another song, and this time it's K Camp's 'Money Baby.' After several songs with chill vibes, Childish Gambino switches up the mixtape again with this more upbeat track. Compared to the other three songs that precede it, 'Money Baby' has, in my opinion, the most enjoyable beat. The instrumental goes perfect with Gambino's singing and rapping, and provides a nice change in style. Singing both the hook and the bridge, CG emphasizes once again that he is an artist with many talents. His singing ability is showcased in many other songs on this project, and all of them have led me to believe that he is one of the best singing rappers today. From what I've gathered, he is a far better singer than Drake, as shown with this song and many others on STN MTN/KAUAI. Gambino continues to provide great verses filled with wordplay and meaning, all with his non-comparable Gambino flow. To sum it up, this track's beat makes up for the one on 'No Small Talk' and has me wanting to get up and start dancing.

5. 'Move That Dope/ Nextel Chirp/ Let Your Hair Blow' feat. Young Scooter

Vinyl

Gambino kills it on this track, no questions asked. He starts the massacre over the Mike WiLL Made It beat from Future's 'Move that Dope,' and spits complete fire. The fast-paced instrumental is matched by Bino's high speed flow and witty lines, referencing Steve Urkel and repping his home town of Atlanta, making for an unforgettable first verse. On the second part of the song, 'Nextel Chirp,' Gambino continues his dominance and raps over a beat taken from Maceo's 2005 song of the same name. CG's verse is just as good as his last, flowing well with the instrumental. The final part of the song, 'Let Your Hair Blow,' features Young Scooter in the hook and a Zaytoven-made beat, which sounds very trap. The beat provides a nice change, giving off a more soothing vibe and succeeded in meeting my high expectations for the third part of the song after I heard the first two. Bino's third and final verse matches the tempo of the new beat by having the same chill flow. I love everything about this song. Gambino murders the track, the three different instrumentals sound great individually, and every part transitions well. This might be my favorite song on the mixtape.

6. 'AssShots (Remix)' feat. R O Y A L T Y

After hearing the last song, I didn't think any track could follow it up, but once again, Gambino proved that he can follow anything up, and if one thing's certain about this song, the beat goes hard. 'AssShots (Remix)' is the first song to feature the Royalty crew, which is made up of Childish Gambino's closest friends and his brother, and is another highlight of STN MTN. Gambino even spits one line that perfectly describes the rapping on every track of the mixtape: 'Flow so vicious.' This song is no exception to that statement because Gambino and the Royalty crew drop fire like rain from the sky. As expected, CG spits with the intensity and flare he is known for and impresses me yet again with his great one liners, but what I didn't expect was for the Royalty crew to kill it. Everyone, from his brother Steve G. Lover to his friends Swank and Fam, spits verses that I was not expecting. To be quite honest, though, I've never taken the time to hear Steve G. Lover before, and I might just start. One thing I haven't gone over in detail quite yet is the beat on this track, and although the verses on the song are amazing, what holds it all together for me is the instrumental. As soon as I heard it at the beginning of the song, I knew the rest was going to be sick. It got me pumped up and hyped for the song and set the tone extremely well. The verses in the song were exquisite and the beat was incredible. I couldn't have asked for anything better.

Gambino

7. 'Childish Gambino @ The Atrium'

This track isn't a song, but it's a hilarious fake drop that pays homage to his hometown. On to the next one.

8. 'U Don't Have to Call'

The intro of this song is an audio recording of CG and his Royalty crew talking to some strippers about a strip club in Atlanta. Then, Gambino starts the song off by covering Usher's 2001 hit 'U Don't Have to Call,' which is why it is given the same name. Bino's rendition of the decade-old song is impressive and shows Gambino's artistic range once again. His singing here is some of the best I've heard from him and does Usher's track justice. The song changes the vibe of the mixtape once more, going from the intense 'AssShots (Remix)' to the much more soothing feel of this track. After singing, Gambino begins to rap in prose, spoken word, about racial issues, his hometown, his girl, and the rap game over a chill beat. Altogether, this track, with Gambino's great singing, intelligent spoken word, and easy-going instrumental, is one of my favorites off of the mixtape.

9. 'Candler Road'

CG makes it obvious from the start of this track that he means business. Reverting back to an intense style, Gambino addresses all of his haters and confidently talks about himself, almost in a cocky manner. His delivery on this track is very violent, a side of Gambino we haven't seen much of, if at all, reminiscent of Kendrick Lamar's verse on control. Gambino's intensity tones down slightly after the beat transitions but still remains powerful. Bino hums a little in the song too, acting as a transition between beats, which is done perfectly. It's evident throughout the song that the main focus of the track is the lyrics and not so much the beat, which is relatively simple, starting with a basic trap beat that transitions into a loop of the beat in 'Telegraph Ave. (Oakland by Lloyd),' allowing Bino to get across his message. Gambino's verses are on a whole other level on this track, and I hope to see more of him like this.

10. 'All Yall'

CG's remix of Timbaland's 'All Yall' is another banger off the mixtape. Bino returns to his classic flow and delivers a flurry of memorable one liners throughout the track. There's not much to say about this song besides the fact that it is a perfect example of Gambino's creativity and lyricism. Every bar on the track is delivered with precision, authority, and the eccentricity present in many of Childish Gambino's songs. The beat is classic, goes well with the verse, and put me in a great mood. Put simply, this song is a great listen for anyone. The analytical fans of Mr. Glover can be impressed by his lines filled with wordplay, while more casual fans can be attracted to the rhythm in deliverance that Gambino is notorious for.

11. 'Go DJ'

Childish gambino camp zip

On the final track on the first half of Childish Gambino's two-part project (say that ten times fast), Bino remixes one more song, Lil Wayne's 'Go DJ.' Interestingly, I thought that CG sounded very similar to Kanye West on 'All Falls Down' during the first minute, enunciating the last word of each line a little longer like Yeezus himself. He later reverts back to classic Gambino flow and continues to kill the track becayse no matter how Gambino delivers his lines, he's always going to pack a punch with his lyrics just like he does on this track. Gambino provides his audience with an abundance of obvious one liners along with subtle lyricism that can be picked up upon after several listens. The beat sampled off of 'Go DJ' is not to be overlooked because it's just as good as most of the other instrumentals on STN MTN and molds with Bino's verses just as well too. This final track is phenomenal, similar to the rest of the mixtape, and I enjoyed listening to it very much, but it didn't feel like the end of a mixtape, which, I suppose, is excused because of the EP, so I suggest downloading both the mixtape and the EP to get the full experience.

1. 'Sober'

Childish Gambino starts the EP off with the track he released in unfinished form on SoundCloud last month. One thing to note is that the production quality of the EP is higher than that of the mixtape, but that's usually the case for an EP. The beat gives off a chill beach vibe that is expected with the EP being named KAUAIand evoked a relaxed feeling out of me after I listened to it. Gambino shows his singing capability once more just as he has done on several other tracks for this project, and I'm sticking to my previous comment and saying that Gambino's singing is far better than Drake's and most other rappers'. His versatility in being able to drop a verse with great lyricism and then sing in the R&B genre may be unmatched, and this project sure has me thinking about that. Once again, Gambino kills it, and he didn't even rap.

2. 'Pop Thieves (Make It Feel Good)' feat. Jaden Smith

Childish Gambino Ep Tracklist

The second track of the EP makes it clear that this is going to be a good time. Gambino keeps the good vibes rolling on his song featuring the young Jaden Smith. The instrumentals are soothing and easygoing just like on the last track and help to set a great tone for the rest of the EP. CG is singing once more, this time with a style that sounds like it would come from an artist like Usher, Jason Derulo, or even Frank Ocean. The song asserts the R&B influence that KAUAI is filled with and doesn't include a rap verse from Bino at all, leaving first listeners wondering if there's any rapping on this EP at all (there is). Jaden Smith adds a spoken word at the end of the track over some jamming drums and bass that fit in very well with the whole Hawaiian beach feel. Donald Glover keeps trying to prove that he can sing, and he does one hell of a job in doing that on this track and the previous one. Now don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good Gambino verse just as much as the next guy, but I enjoy this side of him too. I hope he continues to put out more R&B songs along with his regular hip hop tracks because he provides a freshness in the music industry that it's lacking.

3. 'Retro [Rough]'

CG finally starts rapping on this track, which is a remake a of a song off his first mixtape Sick Boi called 'Love is Crazy,' while also singing a little bit, proving yet again that he is a jack of all trades. The beach vibe present throughout the EP remains on this track and has a nice ring to it, almost like it could stand alone as an instrumental. The beat is pleasant, catchy, and easy to dance to. It's definitely one of my favorites of KAUAI, which has a great tune on every track. The singing, like on the last two tracks, is fantastic, not that I'd expect any less now from Gambino, and he kills his rap verses just like always. Gambino's flow is just as easy to groove to as the beat because he's just that slick. Each line goes right into the next like it's apart of the instrumental itself. 'Retro' shows fans listening to the EP for the first time that Gambino can still rap with his unique style and lyricism that is top tier all while singing at the same time. All in all, 'Retro' is a terrific song that I wouldn't mind hearing over and over again.

4. 'The Palisades' feat. Christian Rich

Childish Gambino Ep Zip Kauai Beach

Childish Gambino is on an R&B wave and can't seem to stop. No complaints here. 'The Palisades' has Bino singing and loosely rapping over a guitar-focused, Christian Rich-produced beat, and he's doing both pretty well again. I should really stop sounding surprised when I say that Gambino can sing because it's become clear to me that he does have the talent to be both a singer and a rapper, so who are we to say that he can't do both. Bino's proven that he can sing, and while that's great, I'm really impressed by his loose rap verse in the middle of the song. It goes great with the acoustic guitar beat and shows that CG isn't afraid to switch up his flow every now and then. What's there not to love about this song? It has great singing, a great beat, and a chill verse from Gambino to top it all off. Just a little over halfway through the EP and as a whole, it's already one of my favorites. CG could've stopped at four and I would've been happy, but there's still three more songs to go, and I'm as giddy as a baby on a swing.

5. 'Poke' feat. Steve G. Lover

Sixteen tracks into STN MTN/KAUAI and I'm convinced that Gambino could just drop everything and become an R&B singer because the singing on this track is some of the smoothest I've heard in a while. 'Poke,' featuring Gambino's younger brother Steve G. Lover, doesn't lose any of dope instrumentals that are in each and every song on Kauai and retains the beach flow that embodies the entire EP. It's lively and upbeat, something I can see a lot of people dancing to. CG's brother Steve G. Lover must have learned a thing or two about rapping from his big brother because he delivers a verse that sounds like it has some Gambino influence, but Steve G. Lover isn't Bino; he's a whole other beast. In fact, his flow is entirely different from CG's, because Steve G. delivers his verse with more swagger than his older brother and less eccentricity with his deeper, more dominant voice. Both Gambino and Steve G. provide great parts to this amazing track, and hopefully, we'll see more from the younger Glover.

6. 'Late Night in Kauai' feat. Jaden Smith

The sixth track on KAUAI transitions the EP into a calmer phase. While the whole album had that positive vibe to it, the last couple songs were really upbeat, so compared to them, 'Late Night in Kauai' is a little bit more soothing instead of grooving. The song opens up with some more Jaden Smith spoken word, like in 'Pop Thieves (Make it Feel Good),' talking about his relationship with a girl. The verse and the drums go hand in hand with the feel of the song and the EP as a whole, so while many people will diss the tracks for having Jaden Smith in it, I think he fits in pretty well. While on the topic of that drum beat, it plays a big role in why I believe this song is one of the best tracks of the STN MTN/KAUAI project. The simple drum beat makes me think of being on a beach at night in Hawaii, fitting in with the whole KAUAI motif. The subtle additions, like bass, harmonies, and piano, perfect the instrumental, allowing it to blend in with, what I believe is, one of Gambino's greatest verses in terms of flow and smoothness. Bino's homie Fam wraps the track off with a monologue that I implore you to listen to. What he says is real.

7. 'V. 3005 (Beach Picnic Version)'

Gambino ends his two-part project with a remix of his hit single '3005.' With instrumentals that match the feel of KAUAI, 'V. 3005 (Beach Picnic Version)' takes his because the internet hit and flips it into a tranquil beach remix. The remix is super barebones, having none of the original verses and only keeping the hook, but it makes up for the lack of lyrics with an instrumental remix that can only be defined as graceful. The remix is so good that it comes close to being better than the original, but comparing the two is like comparing a painting and a sculpture, they are both wonderful in their own ways. After listening to this song, I was satisfied with how it all wrapped up, more so than I was with just the end of STN MTN. This final track solidifies the greatness of the extremely beautiful EP and puts CG's STN MTN/KAUAI project to a close that is definite.

In conclusion, STN MTN/KAUAI is a great musical experience that showcases the talent of artist Childish Gambino. Go to iTunes, buy the EP, then go online, download the mixtape, and enjoy the work of art that is STN MTN/KAUAI.

Michael Jackson has never been bigger – from Daft Punk to Mark Ronson, he's influencing everyone – and Donald Glover, the man behind Childish Gambino, is wearing his MJ influences on his sleeve in Kauai. From the off, this EP offers a snapshot of pop in 2014. Opener ‘Sober' is a slow groove number that could be lifted from ‘Off The Wall' minus the Kanye bass drop two-thirds of the way through. Second track ‘Pop Thieves (Make It Feel Good)' is a much weaker, clichéd pop number that doesn't have the appeal of the previous track or follow up ‘Retro [Rough]', a smooth rap-soul track that matches the feel of ‘Sober' with added textures. Track four continues with sunny-beach vibes in a hugely Neptunes influenced manner; it sounds like it could have been lifted straight from ‘Seeing Sounds'. Unfortunately, the story telling ‘Late Night in Kauai' lets down the side, being a long winded piece that continue's the story of ‘the kid' from because the internet but doesn't have the intricacy of the other tracks. Redemption is found, however, in the fantastic ‘3005' remix that takes you back to the beach that Gambino built.
